This form of compact cup hilt is often associated with the scourge of the Seven Seas. For a packed onboard fight the cutlass was preferred, but is should be remembered that not all fighting was done on ships. Many coastal towns were raided and sacked, and a long double-edged, cut and thrust type blade with good hand protection was prized. It was also something of a status symbol to carry a sword with which the finer points of swordsmanship could be brought into play.
