Two-handed Highland Sword
Gaelic: claidheamh da laimh
This Battle Ready Claymore is based on an early 16th century sword of the same design (above left), this sword has a Scottish Highland late medieval hilt. The blade is German (Solingen or Passau) and probably from the early 16th century. The hilt consists of a longitudinally-faceted quillon-block supporting a pair of long quillons of flattened-hexagonal section inclined towards the blade. Both quillons end in an openwork quatrefoil formed of four tube sections welded together. The sword has a straight two-edged blade.
Swords like this one are often carved and engraved on late medieval and early 16th century gravestones and there is one dated as early as 1539 at Oronsay Priory. The distinctive quillone, quatrefoil and pommel are crafted of solid steel with a macassar ebony hardwood handle. (Scabbard is not included.)
